You have made the decision! All the discussion about remodeling the kitchen, basement and bathroom is now a reality. All that is left to do is select the right home remodel company. Can it be that hard?

A quick search online can be overwhelming. So many remodeling companies say they are the one. Asking friends elicits more horror stories than successes.  Suddenly the excitement of your dream kitchen is transitioning to anxiety. Is it really worth the hassle?

It can be. Let’s take a look at three keys to selecting the right remodel company for your job.

Proven Experience

Perhaps the most important thing to look for in your remodeling company is their experience. Do they have a track record of completing the same type of projects you will be doing?

  1. How many years have they been in business? The longer they have been in business, the better the chances they are producing acceptable work. Ten years is nice to see, more is better.
  2. Review their remodeling website. Pictures tell a story. Review their portfolio of remodeling projects
  3. Check their reviews online
  4. Ask your friends if they are familiar with the company

Quality Craftsmanship

Experience is great. But if the workmanship is not there, then experience matters little. We all can sing, but only a few win Grammys. We all can shoot a basketball, but only a few play in the NBA. We all can hammer a nail, but only a few are master construction and remodel professionals.

Your remodeled kitchen, basement and bathroom will last the rest of your life. You want it to be both solid, functioning, and beautiful. It would be nice is it had timeless interior design elements as well.

Efficient Process

We all have heard stories of frustrating remodel projects. Will the crew show up today? The last communication was two weeks ago. The adjacent room remains unusable even in the last stages of the project.

A quality remodeler has a refined and proven process that makes their remodel projects go smoothly and efficiently. It starts with a good plan, and continues with consistent communication from the remodel company to you, the client.

An efficient process can make a big difference in your quality of life during the process. It can ease frustration, help plan for travel and family events, and provide peace of mind that the project is on schedule.

How do you ensure a good process? Ask the contractor to review the process with you. Ask to speak with former clients and ask them how the process was working with the contractor.

Professional and Pleasant

Finally – and for some, most importantly – is the remodel contractor professional and pleasant to work with. This person and their team will be in your home for many days and maybe weeks. They will be interacting with your children and be amid your personal items.

When you speak with them during the initial meeting, do they show up on time. Are they prepared. Are they pleasant and enjoyable to be around. Ask them about their team. Ask them how they will interact with your children and family during the process. Get a good feel for how you will be able to work with them. Invariable, a question or concern may arise during the process. You want to have peace of mind knowing you can discuss it with the contractor comfortably and professionally.

It is not too much to ask for your remodeling company to meet this criteria.

The good news? There are remodeling contractors that will not only do a great job, but make the process enjoyable and, dare we say, fun. A little homework on your part will result in a quality project completed on budget and on time.
